Rajeev Balasubramanyam was born in 1974 in Lancashire, and originates from Southern India. He is a graduate of Oxford and Cambridge Universities with degrees in Philosophy and Economics. He has had short stories published in a variety of anthologies, including New Writing 12. Whilst at Cambridge, he wrote his first novel, In Beautiful Disguises, set in India with a 17-year-old unnamed narrator, which, after winning a Betty Trask Prize in 1999, was published by Bloomsbury in 2000. Since then he has been prolific as a short-story writer and workshop facilitator; reading, performing and teaching at venues all over the world. His second novel, The Dreamer (2010), is based on one of his short stories, originally shortlisted for the 1999 Ian St James Award. He has a PhD in English and Creative Writing and is part of Lancaster's 'Moving Manchester' project.
